Are you interested in providing a forever home for one of our shelter pets? Our Adoption process is designed to ensure that our pets are placed with caring, responsible owners ready to make a commitment. Please review the information below so you are knowledgeable and ready to ask good questions about which adoptable is the best fit for you and your family.
There are two great ways to adopt a pet through Humane Indiana: at the Humane Indiana Shelter & Adoption Center and through the Rehome program.
Adopting at Humane Indiana Shelter & Adoption Center
Before coming to the shelter, we encourage you to first browse our adoptables below to get an idea of animals you might want to meet. This way you will get the most out of your viewing time. Our adoptables are updated daily, however, we cannot hold an animal for anyone.
All adoptions require interested adopters to meet with our pets before submitting an adoption application. Adoption applications must be filled out and submitted in person.
Please bring a government-issued ID with you. Keep your dog at home unless you have had a discussion with us ahead of time. We advise against first-time dog meetups at the shelter, but rather a slow introduction at home.

Adopting Through the Rehome Program
The Rehome program allows for pet owners to safely rehome their pet through a database to find families wanting to adopt pets in our area, without the stress of being surrendered to a shelter.

Adoption fees allow Humane Indiana to provide care for pets waiting to be adopted. These fees support all of the pet’s health benefits included when you adopt from us.
PUPPIES/ADULT DOGS/SENIOR DOGS
Puppies (6 months & under) = $400
Large Adult dogs (over 30 lbs) = $175
Small Adult dogs (under 30 lbs) = $300
Senior dogs (over 7 years) = $125
KITTENS/ADULT CATS/SENIOR CATS
Kittens (4 months & under) = $150
Adult cats (4 months to 7 years) = $100
Senior cats (over 7 years) = $25
FEATURED ANIMALS
Our “Featured Pets” are available with reduced Adoption fees which help offset medical costs.

Featured dogs are $50

Below are the cost of each service that we provide for your animal as they await adoption. Our Adoption Fees are competitively priced and are more affordable than the cost of vetting.

You Pay: $100/adult cat & $25/senior cat
Did you know $750 is the average* cost for all of the above listed services at a private veterinary practice? When you adopt a pet from HI, not only are you saving a life, you are receiving a fully serviced pet for a fraction of the cost of what you would pay at a private practice.
*Each private veterinary practice charges their services differently. The estimate of $700 comes from an average cost of local practices’ services.

WHY DO YOU WANT A PET?
It's surprising how many people don't ask themselves this simple question before they take a pet home. Pets may be with you for up to 20 years, so be prepared to care for them over their lifetime. Good people sometimes find themselves in unexpected and unfortunate circumstances which prevent them from keeping their pets. If this should happen, be prepared to take a proactive role in finding a new home for your companion animal.
DO YOU HAVE TIME FOR A PET?
Dogs, cats, and other animal companions require food, water exercise, care, and companionship every day of the year.
CAN YOU AFFORD A PET?
The costs of pet ownership can be quite high. Licenses, training classes, spaying and neutering, veterinary care, grooming, toys, food, kitty litter, and other expenses can quickly add up.
ARE YOU PREPARED TO DEAL WITH ANY CHALLENGES A PET MAY PRESENT?
Flea infestations, scratched furniture, accidents from animals who are not yet housetrained, and unexpected medical emergencies are unfortunate but common aspects of pet ownership.
CAN YOU HAVE A PET WHERE YOU LIVE?
Many landlords do not allow pets, and most rental communities have restrictions. In addition, certain types of dogs are often excluded from homeowners insurance policies, or owners aren't allowed to renew or continue their coverage. Make sure if and how you are limited by housing related policies before you bring a companion animal home.
IS IT A GOOD TIME TO ADOPT A PET?
Waiting until you’re settled is probably wise if you're a student, member of the military, or travel frequently for work, among other concerns.
ARE YOUR LIVING ARRANGEMENTS SUITABLE FOR THE PET YOU HAVE IN MIND?
Animal size is not the only variable to think about. A few small dog breeds, like terriers, are very active. On the other hand, some large dog breeds are laid back. Before adopting a pet, do your research by surfing the internet, talking to pet-owning friends and neighbors, and using our shelter staff as a resource. This way, you'll be more successful by choosing an animal who fits your lifestyle and living arrangements.
WILL YOU BE A RESPONSIBLE PET OWNER?
Having your pet spayed or neutered, obeying community leash and licensing laws, and keeping identification tags on your pets are all part of being a responsible owner. Of course, giving your pet love, companionship, exercise, a healthy diet, and regular veterinary care are also essential.
WHO WILL CARE FOR YOUR PET WHILE YOU ARE AWAY ON VACATION?
You'll need to account into your vacation budget the costs to pay a boarding kennel or pet-sitting service. Or if you are lucky, you have reliable friends and neighbors who will care for your pet while you are away.
